Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme

Since 1985 the Netherlands is a member of the international Ocean Drilling Programme . The NWO Division for Earth and Life Sciences pays an annual contribution in order to give researchers the opportunity to conduct drillings into the ocean floor with drilling vessels and make accompanying measurements. The objective is to strenghten the participation of the Netherlands in international plate tectonics research, in the reconstruction of the palaeoclimate, and in research into micro-organisms.

Since 2004 the Dutch participation runs through the European Consortium on Ocean Drilling (ECORD).

Who can apply

Researchers whose application for participation in a drilling expedition has been granted or who represent the Netherlands in the IODP’s scientific assessment bodies. The international programme also has a ‘teachers at sea’ component that aims at the occasional invitation of secondary school teachers.

What can be applied for

A contribution towards the travel and accommodation expenses.

Researchers can sign up for participation in planned drilling expeditions or find information on submitting proposals for drilling sites at www.essac.ecord.org.

Criteria

Thanks to NWO’s contribution the Netherlands can lay claim to a limited number of places on drilling expeditions. Candidates are selected by international panels on the basis of scientific qualifications and distribution of expertise.

Procedure

Budget

NWO pays an annual contribution of 400,000 dollar and additionally provides support of Dutch participants.
