This is the electronic newsletter of WOTRO Science for Global Development. It is published every six weeks and provides information about deadlines, awarded subsidies, research results and policy.

| Call for Veni proposals The forms and instructions for a Veni-application in 2010 are now available on the web. You may submit your application to one of the eight NWO divisions or in case of an interdivisional application, to WOTRO. Mosaic concise ideas
Ethnic minorities are currently under-represented in Dutch academic research. NWO is keen to promote diversity and is concerned about the present loss of talent to the academic world. Mozaďek (Mosaic) is designed to attract more ethnic minority graduates into academic research. Closing date for submitting concise ideas is 14 January 2010. Read more...
Internationalisation in the Humanities
The Humanities Division Board opened a call to promote international cooperation between Dutch research groups and their foreign colleagues. This grant instrument is meant to stimulate the formation of international networks in the humanities and to encourage the submission of humanities grant applications at international institutions. New NACCAP call on impact of clinical trials
To gain more insight in the contradicting views on the relationship between health services and clinical trials, NACCAP will open a new call for proposals. It will offer senior social researchers the possibility to apply for a two year research grant. Research programmes that investigate the impact of the execution of clinical trials on the quality of health services will be supported. It is still being considered if grants will be made available together with EDCTP partner countries. More information will follow soon.
Other Deadlines
Third DPRN call for proposals
The Development Policy Review Network has a budget of € 300,000 to be spent on processes which are aimed at ongoing communication, debate and cooperation between experts from different sectors. Proposals can refer to a one-year process on a theme relevant for international cooperation. The processes are to effectively result in policy reviews, increased cooperation and synergy. Successful CoCooN matchmaking meetings
The three matchmaking meetings of the CoCooN Programme, which were held in Addis Ababa, Cali and Hanoi, proved to be very successful. The motivation and openness of the participants resulted in lively discussions and in constructive partnerships between participants from North and South, research and non-research institutes, and different disciplines. PostDoc position (0,5 fte for 2 years)
WOTRO has made available a 0.5 fte PostDoc position for a period of 2 years to support the Prince Claus chairholder in the development of her research. The position is available at the research Group “Interactions Civil society and Markets” of ISS. The main focus of this group is: understanding the changing roles of civil society organisations in achieving sustainable economic development and income poverty reduction in the South. Read more...
African researchers are missing out on publications and career advancement
During the Fifth EDCTP forum on 13 October 2009 in Arusha, NACCAP and EDCTP organized a satellite meeting on fair ownership of research results. The attendees of this meeting observed amongst others that African researchers are missing out on publications and career advancement, because they are not able to access data or have difficulties with protecting their intellectual property. Register now! Responsible Innovation first autumn meeting 18 November
The first autumn meeting of the thematic research programme Responsible Innovation (MVI) is open for registrations. The MVI projects involve research into ethical and societal questions raised by technological developments, such as neurosciences, nanotechnology, biotechnology and ICT. Areas of concern include safety, health, privacy, responsibility and research output. Read more...

Awarded subsidies
Veni for crime research in Jamaica
Beginning of November NWO awarded a Veni grant to 143 talented young researchers, one of whom related to the research field of WOTRO. Dr. R.K. (Rivke) Jaffe received a grant for her research proposal ‘Between the street and the state: Crime and citizenship in Kingston, Jamaica’. Information about the awarded projects can be found here.

Every other week NWO sends ResearchNews to (scientific) journalists and we would like to include your research results as well. Write a short research summary in plain English (max. 350 words). Please do not use jargon. Your next-door neighbour should understand what you write. You can send your summary to newsflash@nwo.nl.
