Mission

SRON

SRON conducts groundbreaking research in space in order to obtain and disseminate scientific knowledge of astrophysics, the earth and the planets. To do so, the institute develops innovative technologies and uses them in sophisticated space instruments. As national point of contact for research programmes of international space agencies, SRON coordinates the national contributions to the international space research.

Year of foundation

In 1961 Utrechts Laboratorium van Ruimteonderzoek, SRON's predecessor, was founded. The current SRON was founded in 1983 as Stichting RuimteOnderzoek Nederland (Space Research Organization Netherlands). In 2005 the name was changed into SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research.

Locations

Utrecht and Groningen (both branches are located on the university campuses).

Staff (FTE as of 2010)

There are 81 FTE scientific personnel, 113 FTE technicians and support staff.
