NWO Strategy 2011-2014: Growing through knowledge

Science affects each and every one of us. The cells in our bodies, the air we breathe, the materials we use to live and communicate, and the society that we form together.

Scientific progress rarely follows a straight line, it does not always result in fame and fortune and sometimes it follows crooked paths and deep ravines. Yet each step made is a step ahead. And many steps produce knowledge. Knowledge with which we and subsequent generations can live and develop further. NWO’s mission is to actively contribute to the growth of scientific knowledge, knowledge that society fully benefits from either now or in the future.

NWO values scientists who work on solutions to fascinating questions and challenges with full conviction. The outcome of their quest is far from easy to predict but ultimately all knowledge is good knowledge. Sidetracks lead to the main roads and dead-ends open up new views onto other more successful routes. Sooner or later progress is realised.

In its new strategy, NWO wants to structurally invest on an even greater scale in world-class scientists and excellent research. In talented people who right now, in times of scarcity, must be given the space to investigate their innovative ideas for the benefit of society.
