Call for proposals Global Health Policy and Health Systems
The first call within the Global Health Policy and Health Systems programme is currently open for submission of preliminary proposals. The central strategic challenge of the research programme is to contribute to enhancing equitable access to health in quality health systems. The deadline for submission is October 13, 12:00 hrs CET. Call for proposals Integrated Programmes
The new call for Integrated Programmes is now open for applications. This scheme is aimed at supporting excellent problem-oriented interdisciplinary research to the benefit of development and societal issues in the South. The research should lead to new insights, applications, theories or breakthroughs in current knowledge or understanding while addressing developmental issues. The deadline for submission is September 3, 12:00 hrs CET. Read more...
Call for proposals Participation & Travel Grants Matchmaking CoCooN
Within the framework of the CoCooN Programme - Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in Developing Countries -, WOTRO will organise matchmaking workshops in Africa, Asia and South America. The meetings will offer opportunities for researchers and non-researchers from the South and North to substantiate and enlarge their networks and to enhance the establishment of consortia. Grants for Women in Science
Faculty for the Future offers grants for women in science. The faculty is a capacity-building initiative that develops women academics in the sciences from developing and emerging countries by providing funding for advanced graduate study. The long-term goal is to support role models and improve gender balance at the faculty level so that more young women are attracted to scientific disciplines. Read more...
Merian Award for excellent female scientists
In 2009 the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) instituted a biennial award, the KNAW Merian Award for excellent female scientists in the Netherlands. This year the award is for a scientist within the field of alpha and gamma research. The total award is 50,000 Euro. Read more...
START Grants for Global Environmental Change Research in Africa
START, the global change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals for research and assessments of global environmental change (GEC) in Africa in the context of the Joint Projects of the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP). Under this call, START will fund 4 such collaborating groups for the period of approximately one year. Awards will not exceed US$45,000 per collaborating group. Five Integrated Programmes awarded
In June 2009 the WOTRO board awarded five Integrated Programmes, each between 500.000 and 700.000 Euro. Each programme consists of three or more (inter)related Ph.D. and/or post-doc projects. The Integrated Programme scheme is aimed at supporting excellent problem-oriented interdisciplinary research to the benefit of development and societal issues in the South. Read more...
NWO invests 6 million euro in conflict research
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has honoured 11 proposals within the theme Conflict and Security. This will allow 9 postdocs and 20 PhDs to carry out research for 5 years and shall release 8 researchers from their teaching obligations. Their research shall provide new insights into the societal consequences of conflicts. Read more...
Marten Scheffer winner 'Dutch Nobel Prize'
On 9 June 2009, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) announced that Martin Scheffer will receive one of the three NWO/Spinoza Prizes for 2009. Professor Scheffer receives the prize for his pioneering contributions to our understanding critical transitions in complex systems, varying from shifts in shallow lakes to climate change and the collapse of ancient cultures. The prize is the highest Dutch award in science. Read more...

The Virgin Mary strikes back
Bolivian pilgrims come to her in huge numbers to complain about their poor financial position and the neoliberal system which they blame for this. Women also grab the chance to vent their frustrations about their dominant husbands. The Virgin Mary of Urkupiņa not only provides a listening ear, but according to the believers she can also issue harsh punishments. Dutch researcher Sanne Derks established this after 14 months of research in Bolivia. Read more...
'We want sex, not AIDS'
Community health organisations working on AIDS prevention projects in Tanzania, frequently fail to understand how children in Tanzania deal with sex. Miranda van Reeuwijk followed a large group of children in order to help change this situation. The children mainly view sex as something from which they can personally benefit, but frequently hide their relationships from parents and health workers. They are more scared of their strict parents than of HIV. Read more...
Coconuts, gangsters and rainbow fighters
'Attending school and establishing friendships in former White areas of Cape Town make male youngsters who stay in township areas more vulnerable to violence both as perpetrators and victims'. This is one of the conclusions of Marie Rosenkrantz Lindegaard's dissertation Coconuts, gangsters and rainbow fighters: how male youngsters navigate situations of violence in Cape Town, South Africa. Flyer new research programme CoCooN CoCooN aims to contribute to social change by providing contributions to evidence based policy development and practice in the field of conflict and cooperation over natural resources in developing countries. By funding knowledge, research and innovation projects, CoCooN supports local initiatives from the South to partner with international scientists and non-scientists to look for opportunities and new approaches for conflict resolution and cooperation regarding natural resources. Strategy for Dutch engagement in health recovery processes in fragile states The 'Strategy for Dutch engagement in health recovery processes in fragile states' is an advice of the Netherlands Platform for Global Health Policy and Health Systems Research to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The policy question to the Platform was: 'Which policy options aimed at supporting health recovery processes in fragile states can be considered by The Netherlands, within the general policy framework formulated for fragile states?' Open Science Meeting 2009
WOTRO, KNAW and the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology (MoRT) co-operate in the field of Research, Science and Technology and are represented in the Joint Working Committee for Scientific Co-operation between Indonesia and the Netherlands (JWC). This Committee organises regular Open Science Meetings on Indonesian - Netherlands scientific co-operation. The fifth Open Science Meeting will take place in November 2009 in the Netherlands.
