Mosaic winner receives Mexican film grant
30 June 2009
Mosaic winner Itandehui Jansen has received a subsidy from the Mexican film fund IMCINE to produce her film 'Dios No Estaba Ahí' (God has never been here). Jansen received a Mosaic grant from NWO in 2006 for her doctoral research into narrative structures in transnational cinema. The production of the film shall form part of her research.
The film 'Dios No Estaba Ahí' shows how unexpected events can bring people together in a desolate village in Mexico. One of the villagers claims that he has received messages from the Virgin Mary. According to him a miracle is about to take place, but only if everyone in the village participates in a public confession. However, the confessions lead to a lot of upheaval in the village.
The film discusses universal subjects that are placed in a highly specific local context. The film therefore ties in with the research that Jansen is doing into the shifting of boundaries between countries and cultures but also between film genres. Moreover, it offers the possibility to further study the boundary between film practice and film theory. Jansen has previously made documentaries but 'Dios No Estaba Ahi' is her fiction debut. Jansen hopes to complete the film in 2011.
