PUMP YOUR CAREER

Talent Days for female academics

Diversity is indispensable to science. While female students now outnumber males, the transition from lecturer to senior lecturer and from senior lecturer to professor is stagnating.

NWO and the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH) would like to increase the throughput of female scientists in the academic world. To help female scientists secure higher positions in the university world, NWO and LNVH are organising special Talent Days.

During Pump Your Career, female scientists will, for instance, be able to meet role models and learn from their experience. Participants can also network with mentors who will be able to offer support with any problems, or with Innovational Research Incentives Scheme coordinators who can provide tips on the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme, specifically Vidi and Vici. There will also be a number of workshops aimed at helping female scientists who want to gain promotion.

Who is this for?

  • Women working in science (post-docs, lecturers and senior lecturers, professors)

When and where?

On 1 and 2 October 2009 in the Museum voor Communicatie, in The Hague.

Costs?

Participation is free of charge, and includes lunch and closing drinks for those who are demonstrably part of the target group. Participants will be responsible for their own travel expenses.

Language?

The event will be held in Dutch. If you are not a Dutch speaker, but understand it, then the day should be easy to follow. If you do not understand Dutch, but are still interested in this event, then please send an email to k.vandenwijngaard@nwo.nl. If we have enough replies from non-Dutch speakers, we should be able to adjust part of the programme.

Registration

It is no longer possible to register for Pump Your Career.

Workshops

Access to the workshops is only available to those who register in advance. All other elements of the programme can be attended by everyone or will be arranged on the day. Registration is mandatory for:

The workshops will be held in Dutch. Each participant can attend a maximum of two workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The workshops will be given by expert mentors, some of whom shall be accompanied by an actor. Workshops are limited to 30 participants. This means that the organisers reserve the right not to place participants in the workshops of their indicated preference if these are oversubscribed. The participants will be informed of this well in advance.

Role models

On 1 October, there are six half-hour sessions with female professors who already have a career in science. They will say something about their careers to date, the problems they have encountered or missed, combining a scientific job with family life, the dilemmas they have encountered and a lot more besides. The sessions will be chaired by Ionica Smeets. More information

Speed dates

On both days, speed date sessions of 10 minutes shall be held in the morning between 11.10 and 13.00 and in the afternoon between 14.00 and 15.50. You can speed date with mentors from the LNVH. These are women professors who can help you with any career questions. You can also speed date with Innovational Research Incentives Scheme representatives, for example a Vici winner, Vidi coordinator or Vici committee member. About 24 speed dates are possible at each session, making a total of about 48. The speed dates will take place in the Graham Bell Room.

You may only register for the speed dates on the day itself: at reception and during the breaks.

Information market

There will also be an information market during the event, where various organisations besides NWO will have stands. More information
