Objective

Integrated Research in NWO Theme Sustainable Earth and National Programme Knowledge for Climate is part of the NWO Theme Sustainable Earth and is being realised under the auspices of the National Partnership for Sustainable Earth research (NPDA), whose members include NWO, Knowledge for Climate Foundation, Energy research programmes, and several larger and smaller institutes that steer research in the field of sustainability and the Earth.

Application

Who can apply

Researchers from Dutch universities and NWO and KNAW institutes. Staff from other institutes may submit applications if the following criteria are satisfied in NWO's opinion: the institute is located in the Netherlands; the institute has an independent research task; the institute has a non-profit status; in the research for which a subsidy is being requested, the institute cooperates with a university, apparent from a personnel or material contribution from the university; and the researchers are free to publish in the international scientific literature.

What can be applied for

A subsidy can be requested for the appointment of 1 or 2 postdocs for at least 1 but no more than 2 years, and for all specific costs reasonably associated with the research that do not fall under the standard facilities of the institute.

When can be applied

Closing date for submitting applications was 21 August 2009, 11:59 hrs.

The applications submitted cannot be modified or changed after the deadline for submissions or during the period of assessment by ALW.

Selection

Criteria

The programme committee shall use the following criteria when assessing the proposals:

  • I. Relevance for the programme objectives.
  • II. Scientific quality.

During the assessment of the scientific quality, the originality and innovative aspects of the proposal will be examined as equally the track record of the applicant.

Procedure

The admissible applications will be submitted to national and/or foreign expert referees. Applicants may indicate which referees are not considered suitable for reviewing the proposal (‘non-referees’, maximum two per project). The names of non-referees can be sent to the NWO office by e-mail.

The reviews of the expert referees will be anonymised by the NWO office and submitted to the applicants. The applicants will be given the opportunity to respond to the reviews in writing (‘rebuttal’). The rebuttals may be no longer than 1 page A4 in length.

Committees

The evaluation committee shall consist of two members of the NWO theme Sustainable Earth and two members of the Knowledge for Climate Foundation, together with a fifth member from the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment or the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water management. This committee shall discuss the applications on the basis of the referees’ reviews and the applicants’ rebuttals, and shall issue a clearly argued assessment that can be expressed in figures. Subsequently, the evaluation committee shall issue a ranking based on the established differences in quality.

The Steering Group Sustainable Earth, with an additional representative from the Knowledge for Climate Foundation, shall allocate the subsidies.
