Hoeijmakers new board member NWO Division for the Chemical Sciences

The Governing Board of NWO has appointed Prof. J.H.J. (Jan) Hoeijmakers (1951) as a board member of the Division for the Chemical Sciences with effect from 1 April 2009.
Hoeijmakers has been professor of molecular genetics at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam since 1993. He received the NWO Spinoza Award in 1999.

Jan Hoeijmakers studies the ageing process at the molecular and cellular level. His research group cloned the first human 'DNA repair gene' and is tracing down substances that can prevent harm. In 2001 he received the Josephine Nefkens prize for his contribution to cancer research. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious ERC Advanced Investigator Grant.
