New research programme Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in Developing Countries
8 april 2009
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands have joined forces to launch a new research programme: the Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources programme. The programme is part of the NWO-theme Conflict and Security. The first call is scheduled for autumn 2009.

The programme focuses on (i) on enhancing development (positive social change) by providing contributions to evidence-based policy development and practice in the field of conflict and natural resources, and (ii) on making knowledge available, conducting high quality research and enhancing innovation in the field of natural resources and conflict. These foci imply that the programme’s knowledge and research activities need to be strongly embedded in a wider development context and innovation system.
The thematic focus will be based on demands and priorities expressed by the key stakeholders and have to be in line with (one or more of) the three thematic priorities:
- Conflicts, land rights and land-use change;
- Water resources, conflict and cooperation;
- Resource exploitation, global trade and conflict.
The first call for integrated programmes, which have to combine and integrate activities on knowledge sharing, fast-track and long-term research and capacity building and training, is scheduled for autumn 2009.
