Feedbacks in the Climate System

The aim of the programme is to generate knowledge focused on quantifying uncertainties in the climate system, and in particular for the development of this system in the longer term until the year 2200. Knowledge of the climate system is vital for the development of policy based on scientifically-supported scenarios of climate change. Useful predictions and scenarios can only be modelled if the many gaps in knowledge that exist with respect to the complex climate system are filled. Although by its very nature climate research is interdisciplinary, to date it has strongly focused on the physical and chemical processes involved and representations of these in climate models. An interdisciplinary approach focused on understanding feedback mechanisms and quantifying variations in the system is now desirable.

Researchers from Dutch universities, NWO and KNAW institutes.

What can be applied for

Grants can be requested for the appointment of PhD students (4 years) and/or postdocs (maximum 3 years).

When can be applied

Closing date for submitting applications was 15 January 2009 12:00 hours MET.

Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of originality and innovativeness and on the scientific quality of the proposed research and of the research group. If several personnel positions are applied for then the application will also be assessed on the complementarity of the proposals.

Procedure

Applications will be tested for admissibility and will be submitted to at least 2 (foreign) referees for evaluation. Applicants shall be given the opportunity to respond to the evaluations.

Committees

The programme committee will appoint an independent evaluation committee from which it will receive advice. The prioritisation of the programme committee will be submitted to the steering group Sustainable Earth.

Budget

2.5 million euros for this round.
