Continuous Access To Cultural Heritage

CATCH Meeting Museum 2.0

20 February 2009

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT - CATCH MEETING

In collaboration with the Gemeentemuseum The Hague we would like to invite you to the CATCH Meeting to be held on 20 February 2009. This meeting starts at 10.30. The location is the Stadhouderslaan 41 in 's-Gravenhage (http://www.gemeentemuseum.nl/). The meeting is organised by the projectteam MuSEUM. MuSEUM is a project of the University of Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
The main theme for this meeting will be: Museum 2.0

Background of theme:
Emerging new and social media techniques have the potential to fundamentally change the way we experience cultural heritage -- by turning passive users into active explorers that interact with Cultural Heritage content, other users, other users' views and comments. These great opportunities for the web-presence of museums also have a far reaching impact on the institutions themselves: they require a revolutionary change in the ways of curation in museums, with new roles, new audiences, and freed from the traditional physical limitations.

Tentative programme:

10.30-12.00 - Kick-off CATCH Plus (closed meeting for CATCH members only)

12.00-13.00 - Lunch

13.00-14.00 - Welcome by Gemeentemuseum, opening CATCH Programme Committee and introduction new CATCH projects

14.00-14.45 - Why the social web is here to stay [and what to do about it] -- Mike Ellis (Eduserv, UK).

The social web (was "Web2.0"...) calls to human experience and emotion in a way which transcends the hype often associated with it. While the phrase "Web2.0" does a good job of associating certain services and approaches together, it also has a down-side, suggesting that any day now, a "Web3.0" will be along to replace this transient, fickle technology with something new. This talk argues that the "social web" has a momentum which should be taken seriously -- more seriously than "just mere hype", particularly by content-rich organisations such as those involved with cultural content. We'll also examine some of the issues -- particularly around the perceived challenges to authority and "value" of cultural institutions and assets -- can be overcome.

14.45-15.00 - Break

15.00-15.45 - Social Media in Action:

- Social media and institutional change -- Patricia Deiser (Reinwardt Academie);

- Experimenteel platform Gemeen -- Vincent de Keijzer (Gemeentemuseum);
