Language technologist Franciska de Jong strengthens NWO's board

Prof. F.M.G. (Franciska) de Jong has been appointed to the General Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). She is professor of language technology at the University of Twente. The appointment is effective from 1 November 2008.
From 2004 to 2008, Franciska de Jong (Rotterdam, 9 November 1955) was a board member of the NWO Division for the Humanities. In addition to her membership of various advisory commissions and boards, De Jong has initiated several scientific research programmes. With her appointment she replaces Alice ter Meulen who, with gratitude for the services she rendered to the General Board, was honourably discharged from her duties with effect from 1 September 2008.
Curriculum vitae
Franciska de Jong has been full professor of language technology at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Twente since 1992. She is also the managing director of the Erasmus Studio of Erasmus University Rotterdam/KNAW. After graduating in Dutch language and literature in 1980, she gained her doctorate at the Faculty of Arts at Utrecht University. From 1985 to 1992 she carried out research into machine translation at Phillips Research in Eindhoven and from 1996 to 2007 she was an adviser at TNO. She is the initiator/coordinator of several scientific collaborative projects aimed at developing technology supporting the accessibility of multimedia archives.
Governing Board
With effect from 1 January 2009, the Governing Board shall consist of the new chair, Prof. Jos Engelen, and further Prof. Charles Buys, Prof. Ben de Kruijff, Prof. Franciska de Jong and a fifth board member who has yet to be appointed.
