NWO modifies the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme
NWO is modifying the Veni, Vidi and Vici subsidy programmes. More money will be made available to top researchers. Subsidies will be larger, there will be more possibilities for lecturers to submit proposals and there will be less prior paper work. There will be a greater focus on knowledge utilisation, more opportunities for multidisciplinary proposals and proposals from different disciplines will be compared with each other. Read more...

Exchange visit grants (India-The Netherlands)
The Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) invite applications from established scholars for funded academic visits of 1-3 months to recognized research organisations (ROs), including universities and research institutes, in either country to undertake clearly specified research collaborations. For visits in 2009 (with a deadline of March 2010) applications are open until 12 November 2008, 16.00 hrs. local time. Read more...

Call for proposals Agriculture beyond Food
NWO and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) have jointly set up an Agriculture beyond Food research programme focused on Indonesia. The initial budget is 2.5 Million Euro for five years. This programme is one of the activities within the framework of the NWO theme Sustainable Earth and the SPIN-programme of the KNAW. CO-REACH: Coordination of Research between Europe and China
The CO-REACH Social Science Programme aims to bring together Chinese and European researchers, working in the social sciences and (to some extent) the humanities, to collaborate on a joint topic of mutual interest, and thereby explore the possibilities of future co-operation in these areas. The maximum award for one project is approximately 200,000 euro. The closing date for submitting preliminary applications is on 28 October 2008. Read more...

ERC Starting Independent Research Grant
The European Research Council (ERC) has published a new call for proposals for the ERC Starting Independent Research Grants. The scheme targets promising researchers who have the proven potential of becoming independent research leaders. The budget for the first round is EUR 296,000,000. Several FP7 calls launched
The European Commission has published a number of calls for proposals under the specific programmes Cooperation and Capacities of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The calls address different areas like health, environment, food, agriculture and fisheries, biotechnology, energy, socio-economic sciences and humanities. Awards

1 Million for research on reproductive health and economic development
Two research initiatives have been awarded following the joint WOTRO-Hewlett call for research on population, reproductive health and economic development. One initiative will address the impact of reproductive health services on socio-economic development in sub-saharan Africa. The other initiative addresses the hypothesis that reproductive health policies and practices can bring down excess fertility in the short run and will create income surplus at the household level. Highlights of Research Results


Vulnerable careers in Cusco
Each day in the centre of the Peruvian town Cusco, hundreds of street vendors try to sell their souvenirs to tourists. Griet Steel investigated these street vendors and how the growth in tourism is affecting their existence. Steel will receive her doctorate from Utrecht University on 13 October. Read more...

The Telephone Has Grown Legs: Mobile Communication and Social Change in the Margins of African Society
Mirjam de Bruijn has been appointed Professor of Contemporary History and Anthropology of West and Central Africa at the Faculty of Arts at Leiden University as of 15 June 2007. She pronounced her inaugural lecture De telefoon heeft benen gekregen; Mobiele communicatie en sociale veranderingen in de marges van Afrika on 5 september 2008. With a subsidy from WOTRO she initiated a research project on Communication, Mobility and Marginality. Read more...

4 November: NWO Talent Classes

A Talent Class is a masterclass based on one of the workshops of the Talent Days. The masterclasses have the following attributes: professional workshop leaders;a day programme full of interaction, presentations, challenging exercises and tasks; eye-openers, useful tips and personal feedback. All young researchers, Ph.D. and post-doc, can register for one masterclass per day. This masterclass lasts the whole day. However, you can register for two or more masterclasses on different days.
