Preannouncement Call for proposals Conflict and Security

30 juni 2008

Mid-July the official call for proposals on the theme Conflict and Security will be launched on the NWO website. The deadline for preliminary applications will most likely be Wednesday, 1st October 2008. Preliminary applications should relate to one of the five programme lines for which this call will be opened. Descriptions of these programme lines will be made available together with the call.

The following five programme lines will be part of the call:

1) Ethnic conflict in local communities and societies
2) Conflict around work and organisations
3) Framing conflict in culture, politics, and science
4) Conflict escalation, justice and intervention
5) Conflict and religion.

The aim of this programme is two-fold: first, to build and test theory on conflict, and second, to provide society with evidence-based tools and perspectives necessary to adequately diagnose, manage, and benefit from the conflicts it faces. To ensure internationally groundbreaking research and theory development, theory building and testing have to focus on the emerging trends identified in the NWO Theme Brochure Conflict: Functions, Dynamics, and Cross-Level Influences (1. the multifaceted functions of conflict, 2. the dynamic and longitudinal nature of conflict, and 3. cross-level influences). To ensure and facilitate evidence-based practice research programmes have to be designed in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders, whereas insights will have to be communicated in a timely and appropriate fashion to stakeholders both locally and abroad.

Applicants will be invited to submit applications for long-term research programmes that consist of at least two, by NWO funded, interrelated PhD or postdoctoral research projects and possibly a replacement for the main applicant and/or co-applicant. The proposal's focus has to be on theory development and testing, on evidence-based practice, or some combination of both. In any case, proposals have to ensure that the societal functionality of questions will be addressed and that dissemination strategies will be included.

For the sixth programme line, Natural Resources and Conflict, the call for proposals will be announced in the second half of 2008. More information about this programme line and call will be published on this web site soon.
