Call for papers for conference on biodiversity protection

14 maart 2008

The NWO E&B project on the co-evolution of resource and institutions (Tilburg University / Wageningen University) will co-host a conference on biodiversity protection (together with the BIOECON group) to be held in Sidney Sussex College Cambridge (UK; http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk), 28-30 September 2008.

The wider theme of the conference is the effectiveness and efficiency of biodiversity conservation instruments, and the conference tends to attract researchers from a wide variety of disciplines (economists, but also biologists, ecologists, political scientists, etc) to present their work on natural resource conservation, including (but not exclusively) biodiversity conservation.

In the conference, one or more sessions will be dedicated to the analysis of the co-evolution of renewable natural resources and (formal and informal) resource management institutions, and the implications for government policy design. Renewable natural resources and management practices are intricately linked, resource stocks adjusting to the management practice implemented, which, in turn, affects the stock. This interaction gives rise to questions such as what policy instruments work best in protecting resources giving the co-evolutionary linkages, to what extent we can rely on self-regulation, and what the optimal timing of government intervention is – if needed.

Our NWO project wishes to use the available slots in the conference to present our work on these issues, but also bring together researchers from environmental economics, ecology or any other disciplines to present their work. We welcome papers applying evolutionary approaches to resource conservation issues, but also studies regarding the way in which resource conservation policies can crowd in or crowd out resource users’ intrinsic motivation to protect the resource.

Because of the combination with the BIOECON group the conference offers a very interesting package, bringing together researchers from various disciplines, and giving the opportunity for intensive interaction and fruitful exchange of ideas. Sidney Sussex is one of the oldest colleges in Cambridge, and Cambridge is conveniently located just half an hour by train from Stansted Airport.

Admission to the program is on the basis of full papers (to be submitted before May 15), and the hosts will cover all conference costs (lodgings and meals, but not travel costs) for paper presenters and discussants. Details about the conference can be Jan Stoop (J.T.R.Stoop@uvt.nl); please also check http://www.bioecon.ucl.ac.uk /04ann-conf.html for updates. When submitting, please indicate your affiliation to NWO Evolution and Behavior.
