Session Title

Emergent academic language and literacy development of preschoolers and at-risk adolescents in a multicultural environment

Abstract

In this symposium two key issues will be presented, emergent academic language in the preschool period and literacy development of young adolescents. The first study specifically addresses the effects of bilingualism from age three to six. The question is whether emergent academic language in the first language contributes to the acquisition of academic language in the second language. The second paper focuses on academic language input to monolingual and bilingual children in their home and school environment. The last two papers put the emphasis on factors that promote or impede literacy development of adolescents, especially at-risk adolescents in multilingual contexts, aged 13-15. Finally insight will be given into the instruments that have been developed in order to monitor students’ literacy related behavior in classrooms and related teacher activities.
