The CATCH Midterm event successful
On 29th and 30th of November the CATCH Midterm event: ‘Work in Progress’ took place at the Museum for Communication in The Hague.
All members of the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) were invited to this event in order to see the progress of each CATCH project. The event was also an opportunity for the CATCH projects to show the participants how their research has developed.
On Thursday evening, 29th, the event was officially opened by Prof. Jaap van den Herik, chair of CATCH Programme Committee.The purpose of the presentations held on Thursday and Friday was to reflect the thoughts on CATCH today and future. Download the presentations from 29th of November.
While the project presentations represent today’s CATCH, the lectures of Prof. John Nerbonne and the keynote speaker Prof. Willard McCarty focused on several future perspectives for CATCH.
Prof. Anthony Jameson, acting chair of International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB), opened the event on Friday, 30th of November.
After a warm welcome from the chair, Prof. Willard McCarty was introduced as keynote speaker. He presented in a lecture on how the computer science and the humanities might be most productively engaged with each other as approached from an historical and philosophical point of view. The programme continued with project presentations from the CATCH-project teams, presented in three thematic sessions. Each thematic session is based on the research themes within the CATCH strategy. Download the presentations from 30th of November
At the end of each thematic session there was a short discussion on some of the key issues in the presentations.
In addition to the project presentations all teams worked hard on their demonstrators, which were presented in the lunch session. This session was an excellent opportunity to show all participants the latest results of the research in action.
Prof. Margaret Hedström closed the presentations by reading the CATCH limerick originated during the event days.
In the closing session Prof. Jaap van den Herik also paid tribute to Drs. Ronald van Hengstrum, Director Naturalis, who passed away on 19th of August 2007. It was also announced that Prof. Anthony Jameson to continue in chairing the ISAB as the successor of Dr. Wim van Drimmelen.
Finally the chair of ISAB thanked the organisers, the presenters and the participants in making this CATCH Midterm event a success.
