The number of genetically modified crops allowed to Enter Europe reaches 15

29 October 2007

The number of genetically modified crop varieties that can be imported into Europe has risen to 15. Previously the 27 EU member states couldn't come to an agreement on allowing 3 genetically modified maize varieties and 1 GMO sugarbeet to enter the EU. The European food safety experts had already come to a positive advice. On October 24th 2007 the European Commission now had to come to a decision, the Dutch daily NRC reported on October 25th.

Worldwide, GMO-crops are grown on over 100 million hectares. The cropping area in Europe is rather limited however. With regards to importing and use of such crops, anno 2007, a strong feeling of unease still exist in (large parts of) Europe.
