NWO Theme Sustainable Earth Research

Sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals have been adopted as important Dutch Government policy goals. Not only will a lot of changes need to be made before these goals can be achieved, but a lot more knowledge is needed, across many fields: knowledge about social development, knowledge about alternative energy systems, and knowledge about environmental processes. The NWO is therefore furthering the necessary scientific research with the ‘Sustainable Earth’ theme.

The 'Sustainable Earth’ programme consists of the following lines of research:

1. Energy and raw materials
2. 2. Global changes in climate, habitat and environment
   1. Climate change and climate models
3. Worldwide problems, regional and local solutions
   1. Integrated management of river deltas
   2. Sustainable land use in semi-arid areas
   3. Biodiversity
