Van Loosdrecht appointed member of WOTRO Executive Board

The governing board of NWO has appointed Prof. Mark van Loosdrecht as new member of the Executive Board of WOTRO as of January 1, 2007. Prof. M.C.M. (Mark) van Loosdrecht (1959) studied environmental sciences and graduated in physical and colloid chemistry, microbiology and wastewater treatment at Wageningen Agricultural University (the Netherlands). He obtained his Ph.D. degree on microbial adhesion. After working on environmental biotechnology projects at Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) for several years, van Loosdrecht was appointed professor in Environmental Biotechnology in 1999. His primary research interest is at the interface of engineering and microbiology. The emphasis is on wastewater treatment, biofilm processes, nutrient removal and production of chemicals by open microbial cultures. Since 2004 he has been elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2007 Prof. Mark van Loosdrecht has won the Dow Energyprize.
