Woldwide acreage genetically modified crops again has risen considerably
22 January 2007
Annually in January, Clive James on behalf
of the ISAAA organisation is publishing an overview on a global scale of the
cultivation of genetically modified crops.
The 2007 edition shows how the
acreage since 1996 has grown from 1,7 million hectares to 102 million hectares
in 2006.
This roughly amounts to a square piece of land measuring 1000
kilometers on every side, or roughly 125 times the amount of arable land in the
Netherlands.
Last year's area was about 13% over that of 2005.
Another striking fact is that during the past 11 years, only 4 crops seem to mater scale-wise: soya, maize/corn, cotton, canola/oilseed rape.
