MaGW Theme descriptions
Thematic programmes bring together NWO's ambitions. The themes are intended to create focus and mass. They cover multidisciplinary research programmes in subjects which are scientifically and/or societally relevant at that time.
Connecting Sustainable Cities
![]() |
In a number of sectors (water and mobility) the Netherlands has a leading expert position on urban deltas. With the partners in this theme, NWO aims to take a next step by bringing the knowledge developed together, filling in the gaps and applying all of this in integral area development, and by looking for connections between problems at different scales. Brain and Cognition
![]() |
For the modern, knowledge-intensive society, the acquisition, processing and transfer of knowledge is essential. Continuous learning and adjustment processes are needed to respond to the rapid changes. Additionally, the expected marked increase in brain disorders as a consequence of an ageing society will produce improved treatment methods and strategies to prevent brain disorders an urgent priority. Conflict and Security
![]() |
As a result of globalisation, transnational immigration and mobility, societies are becoming increasingly diverse. Consequently, acute confrontations related to cultural, ethnic, religious, class and language differences frequently occur. Research within the theme Conflict and security will address the most urgent societal issues arising from this. Go tho the theme website |
Sustainable Earth
![]() |
The far-reaching effects of our presence on the Earth are becoming increasingly visible and evident: hot and cold, dry and wet, rich and poor. Besides the effects on climate, the environment and ecosystems, this programme also concerns the indirect negative consequences on security, economic development, poverty, public health and welfare. Whereas previously the focus was mainly on describing the processes and preventing harmful effects (mitigation), there is now increasing awareness for the need to adapt to these changes as well (adaptation).
