CO-REACH: Coordination of Research between Europe and China

Key target : Internationalisation, Cooperation
Secretariat : MaGW
Apply : Yes, but at a later stage

Objective

CO-REACH (Co-ordination of Research between Europe and China) is a network of 16 European S&T policy and funding organisations involved in promoting research co-operation with China. It is supported by the European Commission as an ERA-NET Co-ordination Action. The network is intended to improve coherence and synergy in Europe’s S&T relations with China. One way it will achieve this is by launching a multi-lateral research-funding programme with China: the CO-REACH Social Science Collaborative Research Programme between Europe and China.

The CO-REACH Social Science Programme aims to bring together Chinese and European researchers, working in the social sciences and (to some extent) the humanities, to collaborate on a joint topic of mutual interest, and thereby explore the possibilities of future co-operation in these areas.

Twelve partners from the following seven countries will fund the programme:

  • Austria (Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research, BMWF)
  • China (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, CASS)
  • Finland (Academy of Finland, AKA)
  • France (French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, MAEE, and French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, MESR)
  • Germany (Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF, and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG)
  • The Netherlands (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, NWO, and Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, KNAW)
  • United Kingdom (British Academy, BA, Economic and Social Research Council, ESRC, and Arts and Humanities Research Council, AHRC)

Each of the funding partners has contributed a sum of money to a virtual common pot. The total budget for the call is € 1.75 million. The maximum award for one project is approximately € 100,000 – € 200,000. Successful applicants will receive funds from their national funding organisation(s). Projects should run for no longer than two years from June 2009.
