ASTRONET: Coordinating strategic planning for European Astronomy

Key target : Internationalisation
Secretariat : EW
Apply : Yes, but at a later stage

Objective
The goal of ASTRONET is to maintain the leading position of European astronomy in the world, in a time of growing need for global facilities such as an Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and a Square Kilometre Array (SKA). To build the infrastructure, European human and financial resources must be used effectively and efficiently. To accomplish this the ASTRONET consortium has written a joint strategic plan for European astronomy and develops an accompanying roadmap for infrastructure. Simultaneously the consortium has developed a joint programme, which resulted in this call for proposals.
Currently, the ASTRONET consortium consists of 10 partners: CNRS/INSU (France, coordinator), BMBF (Germany), ESO, INAF (Italy), PPARC (UK), NOTSA (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), MEC (Spain), NCBiR (Poland), NWO (The Netherlands) en PT-DESY (Germany). Moreover, MPG and DFG (both Germany), the European organisation ESA, SRC (Sweden), GNCA (Greece), LAS (Lithuania), HAS (Hungary), SBF (Switzerland), SAV (Slovakia), FWF (Austria), ESF (Estonia) and CAS (Czech Republic) are closely involved in ASTRONET. ASTRONET started on September 1st 2005 and has a 4 year term.
