WOTRO Strategy 2011 - 2014

Science and Development: Mutual Inspiration

Globalisation continues to transform the world into an ever-more-interdependent system. Development is increasingly dominated by the interference of global and local transitions. Development discourses and practices widen, embracing emerging topics of global concern and their impact on poverty.

Globalisation and the widening of development discourse inspire new approaches and evoke the involvement of ever new players in international cooperation. The role of science and innovation in global development is becoming more pronounced.

WOTRO has gained experience in ensuring development relevance of research and in combining scientific excellence with development relevance.

Mission and core values

WOTRO envisions a world in which science continuously inspires development actors and in which scientists, in their turn, are inspired by development challenges. WOTRO believes that high-quality knowledge is a crucial prerequisite for change, a prerequisite for realising equity, social justice and sustainability. Consequently, WOTRO seeks to promote the generation, sharing and use of validated knowledge to contribute to processes of transformation that enhance the quality of life in developing countries.

WOTRO’s mission is to promote research for sustainable development.

In pursuing this mission WOTRO is led by its core values, which are:

  • a concern for equity, social justice and sustainability
  • the drive to mobilise the best science for development
  • partnerships between researchers and other stakeholders in development
  • transparency and accountability to stakeholders
Objectives

Within its mandate to promote research for sustainable development, WOTRO sets three overall objectives for the 2011-2014 strategy period and one cross-cutting objective.

1. Increased generation and use of high-quality knowledge
2. Increased generation of groundbreaking ideas
3. Enhanced synergy in knowledge for development

Cross-cutting objective: Strengthened research capacity

Lines of action

Building on experience and on proven best practices, WOTRO will realise the four objectives along three lines of action. Proven facilities and instruments for research funding and for promoting knowledge synergy will continue to be used and elaborated upon, while new tailor-made facilities and instruments will be developed.

WOTRO will organise its activities and funding for the 2011-2014 strategy period along the following three action lines:

1. Funding research that is integrated in society
2. Funding challenging ideas fostering breakthrough
3. Facilitating platforms for knowledge synergy
