Origin of the ERGO programme

The main reason for developing the ERGO programme lies with discussions in Dutch Parliament about the "Integrale Nota Biotechnologie". The Ministry for the environment (VROM) has agreed to having additional ecological research carried out. With new developments in crops in mind, harboring new (combinations of) traits, additional ecological knowledge is needed to keep future risk assessments in line with current high standards.

The Dutch 'Commissie Genetische Modificatie' advices the Ministry for the Environment on matters regarding genetically modified organisms. This independent advisory body, among other subjects, provides advice on applications for introducing genetically mofified plants into the environment or onto the market. In 2003 the Cogem issued three studies, each providing an inventory of research questions covering an important aspect regarding Ecology Regarding Gene-modified Organisms deserving extra attention. On July 23rd 2004 an advice was sent to the State Secretary for the environment, based upon the three reports and a workshop of ecologists that took place in March 2004. The advice and the 3 studies underlying it can be found elsewhere on this site.

Early 2005 a meeting of representatives of the Ministry, NWO and other involved parties took place. It is of utmost importance for this new programme that the research is both meets the highest scientific standards and is highly relevant for, and can be used during, future risk assessments. In order to ensure a good fit with the needs of users of this knowledge, the Cogem has provided the major part of the scientific paragraphs. Another result of the meeting in January is that in late 2005 and early 2006 representatives from both VROM and NWO are visiting some of the companies, business organisations and other organisations involved in this subject. The ideas that resulted from these talks are reflected in the research programme. The first call for preliminary proposals was open from March 23rd until May 25th 2006. Since then 3 calls for full proposals followed. The decision on the third and last call took place in June 2008.
