Objective
In the schedule of the Programme Council for Education Research (PROO) longitudinal research takes a special place. It is indispensable for the evaluative branch of education research. One of the longitudinal researches is Secondary Education Cohort Pupils (VOCL), a representative test among about 20,000 pupils from about 200 schools.

The aim of this test is twofold: one, to better understand those factors at pupil level—such as intelligence, previous schooling and social-economic status— that affect performance at school, schooling course and choice of career; two, to analyse the effects that educational factors at class and school level have on the performance of pupils and schools.

By collecting data in a longitudinal way the research outcomes are of major importance, both socially (as a means to evaluate educational policy) and scientifically (as the empirical basis for testing the effectiveness theory, for example).
