Objective

Subsidy programme Free Competition for the advancement of innovative and high-quality scientific research in the social sciences. Under the Free Competition MaGW 2010 scheme applications can be made for all Social Science disciplines. More information in the list of expertise codes.

A programme website has been launched for the Free Competition in January 2007. All relevant information on the Free Competition is available on this site.

Application

Who can apply

Professors or researchers who have obtained their doctorate and who are attached to a Dutch university or NWO or KNAW institute - where the proposed research project will be executed - can apply for PhD or postdoc positions. In case of research leading to a PhD thesis, the main applicant as a rule is the supervisor or co-supervisor.

What can be applied for

Free Competition MaGW applications can be made for PhD or postdoc research. As to personnel costs: refundable are at most the costs of a 4-year full-time PhD research project or a 3-year full-time postdoc project.

When can be applied

In 2010, two subsidy rounds have been organised.

Round 1: Open: 6 April 2010 11:00 hrs
  Closing date: 8 April 2010 12:00 hrs
Round 2: Open: 5 October 2010 11:00 hrs
  Closing date: 7 October 2010 12:00 hrs

In the first round, 171 applications were submitted.

Selection

Criteria

The applications are assessed according to:

  1. Originality and potential contribution to knowledge
  2. Research design and methods
  3. Competence and expertise of the applicant(s)
  4. Planned outputs and dissemination
  5. Societal relevance

Procedure

Per subsidiary round a maximum of 235 applications can be considered. For applications under consideration the procedure to be followed is itemised below. For a detailed description of the procedure please consult Chapter 4 of the brochure.

  • Testing against criteria for submission
  • Preselection 
  • Selected proposals will be assessed by referees 
  • Feedback to applicants
  • Assessment and prioritisation advice in evaluation committees
  • Decision by the MaGW Divisional Board
