Strategy 2007-2010

Economic prosperity and a feeling of well-being are closely linked with the way in which we perceive our environment and all aspects of life and the links between these. A thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the earth and life sciences is essential to make our life 'W-earth-while'. The Earth and Life Sciences Division (Dutch acronym: ALW) of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (Dutch acronym: NWO) provides a strong national basis for much-needed research and development. This basis should enable us, with the proper quality assurance, to make the right choices independently and to formulate a policy based on sound scientific data.

The ALW strategy summarises all our plans and wishes for the next few years. Generic funding is indispensable to enable scientists to develop themselves and to carry out first-rate research. ALW is receptive to creating and developing new ideas and opportunities, together with partners, both for science and society. The present brochure outlines the areas where this can be implemented best.

ALW participates in several NWO themes, but also oversees a number of specific policy domains itself and is responsible for a number of programmes in cooperation with various partners – each of which has its own need for knowledge. In order to realise these plans, the ALW budget should double to 60 million euros annually, with an additional 33.5 million euros coming from external funding.
