Doctoral Grant for Teachers

Teachers can apply for a grant for a PhD study.

Purpose

Teachers from primary, secondary, further professional, higher professional and special education can receive a grant for a PhD study. The aim is to directly apply the knowledge and research experience acquired for the benefit of educational practice. A higher number of practising teachers with a PhD also increases the quality of education and strengthens the connections between universities and schools.

You can apply for a PhD grant for any research subject. However, you must be able to indicate the importance of the research for your own educational practice or education in a broader sense.

Who can apply

You must hold a tenured position and on the closing date for submitting applications you must have been employed for at least one year at an educational institute funded by the Dutch government. Teachers who have already started with a PhD study can also submit an application.

What can be applied for

With the PhD grant a replacement teacher can be appointed for a period of maximal 5 years for half of your contract hours, up to a maximum of 0.4 fte.

When can be applied

The first closing date for submissions in 2017 is 24 January 2017, 14:00 hrs.

Assessment

Criteria

Further information about the criteria can be found in the call for proposals.

The quality of the candidate and the research proposal are assessed according to two criteria:

  • quality, motivation and persuasiveness of the applicant
  • quality of the proposed research and the effects of this

Procedure

A science-wide committee will assess the proposals and will compile a prioritisation list. Candidates with the highest chance will be invited for an interview. The candidate will present the elaborated research idea to the selection committee. The decision-making body of NWO will take the final granting decision.
