Physical Sciences

NWO Physical Sciences encourages innovative, fundamental, strategic and applied research in astronomy, computer science and mathematics. This is realised through, for example, the funding of research projects and programmes and the organisation of scientific meetings. .

Astronomy, mathematics and computer science are indispensible for obtaining an understanding of the nature, origin and future of human beings, the world and the universe. The Netherlands is a world leader in the physical sciences with broad economic and societal interests

NWO Physical Sciences wants to make a major contribution to the realisation and retention of a superb scientific climate with special attention for the application of knowledge. Knowledge utilisation increases the contribution of scientific research to welfare and prosperity.

Results from the research funded by NWO Physical Sciences benefit science, public and civil society organisations and industry.

Strategy NWO Physical Sciences

NWO Physical Sciences realises the NWO-wide strategy memorandum 2015-2018. Each year the NWO Physical Sciences Board compiles a strategy document based on this memorandum.

NWO Physical Sciences' strategy ties in with the ambition of NWO:

  1. Investing in talent and curiosity-driven research
Wherever possible, NWO gives talented young researchers extra support. For example, the Talent Scheme facilitates the career perspectives of young researchers. Within the TOP Grants money is made available for innovative lines of research by groups with a proven track record and for individual young researchers.
  2. Collaboration in themes
Much innovative research emerges from a consolidation of strengths. NWO Physical Sciences therefore funds multidisciplinary research programmes such as Astrochemistry, Forensic Science and Cyber Security.
  3. Facilitating knowledge utilisation
For the golden triangle industry, knowledge institutions and government a new funding instrument will be opened in 2013. The ambitions of the Roadmap ICT have shaped the choices for research themes and public-private partnerships in the discipline of computer science. To facilitate knowledge utilisation, meetings are organised per discipline for researchers and industry such as ICTDelta and Mathematics for Industry.
  4. International collaboration
NWO Physical Sciences actively seeks contact with international initiatives to bring together the best research groups and researchers in the domain of the Physical Sciences. Furthermore NWO Physical Sciences sets up bilateral collaboration possibilities with emerging science nations, for example through the Science Industry Cooperation programme.
  5. Making high-quality facilities accessible
The Physical Sciences Board participates with several organisations from other countries in the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) and ALMA Regional Centre|Allegro.
