National Programme Sea and Coastal Research - Ship Time Open Programme

Secretariat : ALW
Participating NWO Institutes : NIOZ
Apply : Yes, but at a later stage

Objective

Sea and Coastal Research Ship Time is a grant programme aimed at supporting the additional costs of seagoing research expeditions. The ship budget is administered by the National Programme Sea and Coastal Research. Proposals for ship time may be submitted up until the closing date for this grant together with a proposal for the ALW Open Programme.

Application

Who can apply

Qualified researchers in the field of seagoing research are eligible to apply. Applicants should have research experience and lead the research for which funding is being applied throughout the duration of the entire project. Each main applicant may only submit one proposal.

What can be applied for

A maximum of 26 ship days on the national research vessel Pelagia may be requested. These ship days include 1 to 2 days for loading and unloading in the harbour and transit time from the departure and arrival harbour to the research area. The cruise time requested must start in 2011. Besides ship time, support for expedition costs is offered via NIOZ-MRF. On top of this, personnel costs for 1 PhD or postdoc position can be applied for. Additional costs related to the awarded ship time shall be covered by NIOZ for NIOZ-related applicants and by ALW for all other applicants.

When can be applied

  • Closing date for submitting proposals was 12 March 2010

Extra Information

Applications for ship time can be submitted via Iris (www.iris.nwo.nl). The form and the project proposal must be submitted via the ALW Open Programme. The application form with the additional ship time information must be submitted separately via Iris.

Selection

Criteria

The proposals shall be evaluated on the basis of (a) scientific quality of the research project, (b) urgency of the use of extra ship days and (c) the added value of the extra ship days. The number of ship days requested can be adjusted by the evaluation committee.

Procedure

The preparation and realisation of the expeditions takes place in cooperation with NIOZ-MRF. In addition to the project proposal, a separate form with further technical information (in Dutch) must be completed and submitted via Iris. After the cruise trip has been completed the expedition leader must write a cruise report for NIOZ/MRF and ALW.

Submitted proposals for ship time shall be evaluated for scientific content in accordance with the evaluation procedure of the ALW Open Programme. This means that these proposals will be subject to qualitative competition with other PhD and/or postdoc applications submitted to ALW. On average ALW takes 7 months to reach a grant allocation decision for submitted proposals. After your proposal has been ranked you will be contacted about the further elaboration of your ship time and the planning for the Cruise Plan 2011.

If insufficient ship days are available then only the highest ranked projects in the Open Programme procedure shall be awarded. Ship day applications that fall outside of the Open Programme projects awarded shall no longer be valid.

Committees

In the Open Programme project proposals are ranked by an evaluation committee. The ZKO Programme Board appoints a committee of experts that evaluates the proposals for ship time in consultation with the MRF. The committee can modify the number of ship days requested.
